Flags over Tiananmen Square
In Imperial days, Tiananmen Square was off-limits to ordinary citizens, who could be imprisoned just for looking at it. Under Mao it became a great stage for him to review the Red Guard parades. To outward appearances, the Square open to all, but it is tightly monitored by security cameras and PLA soldiers.
