These crazy escalators appeared out of nowhere. We didn't stop, so I don't know how they are used or anything. At some point they will be under water. Strange.
China is a land of great contrasts, especially between the wealth & technology of the cities and primitive conditions in the country. People who lived hundreds of years ago would feel right at home in most places we saw along the Yangtze, where farming techniques have barely changed over the centuries. You'll be cruising along, admiring the rugged scenery then around the next bend you'll see these strange new metropolises springing up above the high water mark. Endlessly interesting.
