Fengdu: The Ghost City

Legends & superstitions surrounding the "ghost city" temples of Fengdu date back many centuries. Ironically, Fengdu city is now literally a ghost town. The entire city of Fengdu was demolished for the dam project and all the 50,000 inhabitants re-settled across the river. Corruption was rampant in the Three Gorges Project. One resettlement official in Fengdu providence was sentenced to death for skimming $1.8 million in land-use revenues.
When the flooding created by the Three Gorges Dam is completed in 2009, this lovely pavilion will stand atop an island instead of a mountain.
